This type of non-destructive testing is a pretty simple process. There are two variations of MPI tests: Wet Magnetic Particle Testing, and Dry Magnetic Particle Testing. Regardless of which method is used, the first step is to run a magnetic current through the testing material. Next, metal particles are spread over the component. These particles will be drawn to any flaws near the surface, allowing testers to clearly see the approximate size and shape of the flaw.
What method you choose to use will depend on the types of flaws you are looking to identify. The wet method offers improved sensitivity for detecting very fine surface flaws, while the try method offers improved sensitivity for detecting subsurface flaws.
